In the early 1930s, Bright Young Things dashed around from tennis matches to cocktail parties, from golf competitions to nightclubs, and their wardrobe had to match their active lifestyle. It was still considered very daring to wear shorts like these for playing tennis, 'nice' girls still wore modest skirts. Today, Bright Young Things wear fabulous shorts like these day or night, with boots and funky tights, with braces and a simple tee, with glamorous t-bar heels. Still daring, still chic.

The shorts are made from a deep cream wool, with vertical pintucks creating their fullness. They have a high waistline, and skim easily over the bottom. The waistband fastens with a row of hooks and eyes, for a sleek finish.

These shorts are in very good condition for their age, with no mothholes (almost a miracle for 80 year old wool!). Their only fault are tiny dirt spots over each hook around the waist and side fastening, the worst one of which can be seen in the main photo. When laid flat, they measure as follows:

  • Waist - 26"
  • Hips - 38"
  • Rise - 15"
  • Waist to hem - 19"
